Malaysia is a commonwealth country, independent from British colony since 31th August 1957. For the past 64 years, the relationship between the two countries remained close. Malaysia is the United Kingdom’s second largest export market in ASEAN and the UK is Malaysia’s third trading partner in Europe. Below are the lists of royal visits by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, His Royal Highness Prince Charles and His Royal Highness Prince William.
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
- 1972, end of February to early March
This marked her first and longest visit to Malaysia together with Prince Philip, where she toured several Malaysian states including Penang as well as General Hospital at Kota Kinabalu (renamed in her honour–Queen Elizabeth II Hospital). 2. 1989, October 14-17th
Her Majesty and Prince Philip made an official visit to Malaysia for the Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The visit was hosted by The King Azlan Shah of Perak. Of note, there was a stamp issued by Pos Malaysia for the CHOGM on 18th October 1989 with 3V stamps. However, Her Majesty image was not printed in the stamps or first day cover.
3. 1998, September 20-23th
This marked the third visit by Her Majesty and Prince Philip to Malaysia to officiate at the closing of the first ever Commonwealth Games held in Asia–16th Commonwealth Games (SUKOM 98). It was hosted by The King Jaafar of Negeri Sembilan. A prepaid commemorative envelop of RM5 was issued by Pos Malaysia on 21st September 1998 with the image of The Queen on left lower part of the cover.This marks the first image of Her Majesty portrait printed in Malaysia philately.
His Royal Highness Prince Charles
HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, the eldest child to Queen Elizabeth II, is the heir apparent to the British throne.
- 2017, November 2-8th
His Royal Highness Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall made their maiden visit to Malaysia from 2nd to 8th of November 2017, as part of an 11-day tour to Asia, which commemorates with the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United Kingdom. The royals visited Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak, Perak and Penang. Commemorative stamps was issued on 3rd November 2017 consisted 2v stamps of RM1 and MS of RM6.
His Royal Highness Prince William
HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, is the elder son of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales. He has been second in the line of succession to the British throne.
- 2012, September 13-15th
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, made their three day official visit to Malaysia in conjunction with the celebration to mark the 60-year reign of the Queen Elizabeth II. The couple visited Kuala Lumpur city as well as Danum Valley in Sabah. Pos Malaysia released the commemorative stamps issue on 13th September 2012 with 2V stamps of RM1.50 and MS consisted two stamps of RM2.50 value. It was a very hot selling stamp issue.
